How to update your camera firmware

Have a camera and not sure if there is a firmware update or not. You can always go to your product website and check for the latest camera firmware update. I recently bought a full frame Nikon DSLR D600 and wasn't sure if there was a firmware update or not. All cameras will have their support website where you will find camera firmware update. I will be speaking about Nikon camera here and here is the link to check if your Nikon camera has a firmware update or not [Link]. It's always better to update your camera with the latest firmware updates as these updates usually will have bug fixes, new features, fixes for known issues etc. See that you have a fully charged battery which is a requirement before updating firmware. Follow the following steps to update your (Nikon) camera firmware:nikon camera firmware update

  • Switch ON your camera.

  • Go to Menu and navigate to Settings >> Firmware Version.

  • Check if the firmware is the latest.

  • Switch OFF your camera.

  • Format your camera memory card and see that it has no data.

  • Download the right file from Camera's support website to your computer.

  • Save .bin file in a newly created folder, unzip if needed.

  • Copy this folder containing .bin folder in the top level of the memory card.

  • Insert the memory card back to camera and switch it ON.

  • Go back to Menu >> Settings >> Firmware Version.

  • Camera will auto detect the later Firmware from memory card.

  • Select the latest firmware and install it.

  • Remember not to switch off your camera till the installation is done.

  • Once the installation is done, you can reformat the card to delete the setup file from your memory card.

Installation hardly takes any time (took less than a minute on my Nikon D600). Also, installing the latest camera firmware update fixed many of the minor issues and few new features were added as well. Check your camera support website and install the latest camera firmware.
