I have been writing articles for a while here in my blog for few months now. And most of my posts that were published in my blog were indexed by Google. I keep an eye on how well my blog is performing by checking it's security updates, website traffic, health of my website etc. My website traffic stats were showing an increase from few hundreds to few thousands as the number of blog posts that were indexed increased. I used to get a decent traffic until start of Dec'13. But soon after that, my website traffic stats were showing a sudden dip in my traffic which was very disappointing.

Many might be facing the same issue and wondering what is wrong with their website by looking at the website traffic stats. There can be multiple reasons for the low traffic. I have been searching in the internet as to why my traffic went down by almost 50 percent, back to few hundreds a day from thousands. And most of the blogs and websites were complaining about Google's search algorithm update like Penguin, Panda, Hummingbird updates. I agree that many websites were impacted with this search algorithm update, but this need not be true for all the websites.

I had written more articles in the month of Dec'13 when compared to the total number of articles that were written in Oct and Nov'13 put together. And I have been expecting my website traffic to double, but it was a nightmare for me to see my website traffic stats that instead of doubling, traffic had come down by 50 percent. Note that the traffic to your website might be dependent on multiple things.

87 percent of my website visitors are from Google search (organic) and my alexa traffic stats shows that most of the visitors access my website when they are at office. So, almost all of my traffic were from my website's indexed pages which were appearing in Google search. Remaining traffic source were from either direct or referral and less than 3 percent of the traffic was from social media.

The reason why I suddenly saw a dip in website traffic even after writing double the number of blog posts was that it was vacation (Christmas) time world wide. Most of them are on their annual leave and most of the traffic that I get is from Google, that too these visitors don't visit my website when they are outside their work place. As my social media traffic is very low and Google search results were the main source of traffic, my website traffic has come down drastically.
The reason why you don't have to worry is, this is a common problem with most of the bloggers unless you have good traffic from social media or other sources. Even though the number of visitors were low during Dec'13 my overall worldwide Alexa ranking were showing good signs (lower the value better is your ranking). This is how I came to know that most of the websites are having the same issue.

One way to increase traffic during this season or time is to increase the number of blog posts which I did. And not be dependent on just Google's search traffic. Try increasing your presence on social media and other places so that you get traffic from other sources too. I recommend not to stop blogging during as Google will take some time for your posts to index and these indexed will be ready in the search results for visitors once they are back from vacation.

I was hoping the slow down in my traffic was due to the holiday activity, I am going to wait til next year I keep telling myself, hopefully, but it has been slowing down since Dec. 13 or so and I am concerned.
ReplyDeleteI think it's the same case with everyone.. It might recover back to normal by end of first week of Jan. You don't have to worry.. because the issue is with everyone around the world. You can check your alexa rank, if its has come down then there is something to worry.. but if you are doing good (lower the alexa rank, better it is) then you don't have to worry.
