How to build a website on your own

build a websiteI have seen many who are interested in starting their own business and also want to create a site for this. You don't need to be a techie to build a website on your own. Many are good in offline activities but when it comes to online activities like increasing social presence, having a website or blog they fail. They think that there are not capable to build a website on their own.

To build a website on your own is easy and you don't have to hire a web developer. You can build one without anyone's help atleast for small projects or for your store website. It's good to hire a developer or a tester for large scale or if you are dealing with bank transactions related activities where security is to be given importance. Else, for a blog or just for fun kind of blog, you don't have to spend money and time in web/ UI development.

You can go for free options like blogger or Wordpress.com (there are many more). Before going with free blog creation, here is what you need to know – Blogger Vs WordPress.com. If you have a bit of money to spend then go for your own hosting or domain purchase, which I recommend as you have full control over your blog or website than using a sub domain.

Once you have purchased a domain and hosting don't go for website building plans which are usually offered when you purchase hosting or domain. Instead I recommend installing Wordpress (.org) which is supported by most of the hosting servers. There are enough number of themes that are available for both free and paid. Before going ahead and buying premium Wordpress theme check out this post - Do you really need premium WordPress themes. Now that you have chosen the theme and have installed it, create a child theme before installing any of the plugins. If you are wondering as to why you need a child theme then check - How important is it to work with Child Theme in WordPress.

Once you have child theme setup, it's time to install the plugins. Don't blindly install each and every plugin that is available. See the rating that is given by other users also when the plugin was last updated. Some of the plugins are poorly coded and can have bad impact on your website performance. Choose the one with high rating and preferably a plugin which was last updated just few months ago (max.) and also it should support the latest version of your theme. Check out this must have WordPress plugins when you build your own website.

Once you have all the necessary plugins installed, you are good to go with your first blog post. These are some of the basic things that you need to do when you build a website. You don't really need anyone's help or any coding knowledge to do these.
