You might have seen too many annoying ads in websites. Consider this case where you have searched for some imported perfume using Google search. The next time you browse some other website or go through daily online newspaper, these websites will display the ads of perfume that you had searched for or perfume related content as ads provided these websites use Google Adsense. It works best with Google Adsense as these ads are related to the search that you do on internet and many other parameters. Other ad networks may not give you good related ads and this is the reason why Google Adsense is the best ad network as of today.
I have seen many a times the ads on Facebook which are not related to my search history or ads that are of my interest. And in YouTube, I'm forced to watch an ad which is of 5 or 30 secs or a pop-up ad appears which is annoying for most of us. Check my previous post on "How to block ads on webpages" to block ads on Facebook and YouTube if you are using Chrome browser to browse.
Google chrome browser has an option where users can opt not to track. To enable this in your browser, go to Chrome browser Settings >> Privacy. Now enable the check box which says "Send a ‘Do Not Track’ request with your browsing traffic". Enabling this will stop other ad networks from tracking info like what you have searched for. This info is usually used to display related ads in websites. Note that enabling this will not block ads in websites, but will not allow Ad networks/others to track. So, you may not find perfume ads, instead some other ads.
These ad networks show ads in websites based on the DoubleClick cookie on your browser, the content of the website that you are viewing, types of website that you visit, your previous interaction with ads, your Google profile (for adsense). Note that good ad networks do not collect your personal information or associate your DoubleClick cookie with sensitive topics without your consent.

If you want to block ads completely then there is an option to do that as well. Each ad that is displayed (most of them) will also show (in one corner of the ad) something like 'AdChoices' in Google Ads, 'Opt Out' in Chitika ads, '?' symbol in Infolink ads etc. You will find similar options in most of the ads. Clicking on this will give you an option to opt out of the ad network. You can also go to privacy policy page of a website to disable Adsense ads where you will find opt out option. Note that it's mandatory for websites to put 'opt out' option and other related content related to Adsense and tracking in privacy policy page else Google will not allow websites to display Google Ads.
But this wont stop the annoying ads, you still have to put efforts to ignore them.
ReplyDeleteYes.. too many ads might distract users and they might just leave the site. This increases the bounce rate.
