If you have installed office 2010 professional or office 2010 home edition or any other version of Microsoft office then the preview pane is the most common thing that you see. By default, you can see the preview pane to view each of the emails. All that you need to do is select an email and it will show you the preview of the selected email. But if you are using Gmail, you will have to open the email and there is no email preview pane by default.

If you are looking for a preview pane just like how we have in MS outlook then there is an option in Gmail which you need to enable. By default, this is not enabled. Follow the following steps to enable this option.
- Login to your Gmail account.
- Go to Gmail settings and click on 'Labs'.
- Scroll and find an option named 'Preview Pane'.
- Enable this option and click on save.

Once enabled, it will appear as shown above. There are many such experiments in Gmail Labs which you can try. There is no guarantee that this might always work as it's still in Labs. By enabling this option you can read emails right next to your inbox conversations and making mail reading faster and adding more context. I like the preview option as it is faster to read hundreds of email. This is useful if you get too many emails, but may not be very useful if you hardly get any emails. As of this writing, this option of preview pane works only on desktop or laptop and not on your mobile device or you Gmail app. Also, there are 3 options that appear on top of your inbox once this option is enabled. Vertical pane view, horizontal pane view and none, just like how we have in MS outlook. You can select the option that you want. Give it a try and leave a comment if you find this useful.
