How to disable autoplay option in Windows

How many times have you seen a pop-up appearing when ever you connect your hard disk or pendrive or your phone asking you to choose a program so that you can play the music or watch video etc. Also, if there is a software that's installed example Lightroom for photo editing then when you connect your external hard disk, Lightroom will auto open these photos for you. It can be irritating sometimes if that is not what you are looking for in the external device and it would be better to disable autoplay.

Recently, I had connected my 1 TB external hard disk which has 4 partitions in it, to my laptop. Had installed a free/trial version of a software/Lightroom. All 4 partitions had some photos in it. Every time I connect my hard disk I used to get multiple pop-ups like scan disk, select program to Autoplay and also, it used to automatically open Lightroom whenever there are photos in a partition. The same thing used to happen for all partitions. As soon as I close, there used to be another pop-up for the other partition asking me what to do or used to autoplay using some software. And softwares like Photoshop and Lightroom used to take lot of time just to open it's own software and then load all photos.

I connected my device just to get some PDF file which were in one of the partitions in the external hard disk and was not looking for any image file. But had to wait till the autoplay software was fully loaded and till all the pop-ups where closed. By default when a new software is installed, it will automatically become the default software to open a file. You need to manually disable this option so that you can start browsing the file that you want as soon as you connect your external device.

To disable autoplay or to customize the way you want - Say, you want all audio files using Windows media player then you can view and change these settings the way you want. To do this go to your Windows Control Panel >> All Control Panel Items >> AutoPlay. As shown in the image below, choose the default option that you want.

Say, you have 2 softwares to open photos - one is Nikon and the other is Lightroom and you switch between the two for different types of images. It's better to select 'Ask me every time'. If you want to open all music file using windows media player then select this option under Audio files as shown below. And if you don't want any action to be taken then select 'Take no action' option.

Disable autoplay option in windows

This is a very common thing, but I have seen many are still lazy to even go to control panel and select this option. It won't take much time to close pop-ups but it can be annoying sometimes and that too if it auto opens Lightroom or Photoshop which takes longer time to load, each time you connect and that too for every partition - that can be very annoying. I recommend to keep it as 'Take no Action' for all as the default settings and every time you install a new software don't forget to disable autoplay option.
