We all use internet and most of us have an unlimited plan with a limited speed (download speed) limit. It's always better to track internet usage even if you have an unlimited plan. Most of the internet service providers set a download limit even though it's an unlimited plan. There is something called fair usage policy.

As of this writing i'm using an internet connection with 2 Mbps speed and 30 GB limit (unlimited plan) and I track internet usage using ISP's android app or by logging to their website. Usually at the end of month/ billing cycle once my usage crosses 30 GB limit, the speed will be brought down from 2 Mbps to 512 kbps as per fair usage policy.
What is the first thing that most of us do when we think that there is an issue with the connectivity. Just type in google.com in the browser and check if it works or not. Right? I had issues with the speed multiple times and had to raise a ticket every time my internet speed went down. To check your internet upload, download speed and also to check how good the internet connection quality is, check how to perform internet speed test. So, if you speed is lower than what was promised to you then it's time to call up customer care and ask them to fix it.

To track internet usage using your Chrome browser there is an extension named 'Net Usage Item' which you can download from Chrome Store. This extension lets you know how much of your internet usage quota is left. It's a good tool to track internet usage but this tool will fetch usage details from your ISP and not from your system. One way it is good as you might connect to your home network using multiple device like Computer, Laptop, Tablet, SmartPhone etc. over WiFi. You need to provide details like username and password so that this tool can fetch your data from your ISP. And this tool supports only limited number of ISP's and that too in specific countries. Check out the list of supported ISPs and countries in the extension page.

I would recommend using your ISPs app or their site to track internet usage as your ISP may account for a data usage differently. If you are using an android smartphone/ tablet and want to track internet usage of Chrome browser/ other app then check - how to monitor internet usage for an App.
