Ever tried changing file extension on your android device from .jpg to .gif or any other file format. Or ever tried uploading .exe file in Gmail and your upload just fails because you are not supposed to upload or Gmail doesn't allow .exe files to be uploaded.
I used to remove .exe file extension in then upload the .exe file to my Gmail in my PC and leave a note saying - please add .exe extension after downloading in Gmail before sending just to make sure that the other person to whom I'm sending understands what type of file it is.

Well, I tried that on my PC and I doubt if I can do the same on my Android as there is no option for me to change file extension in Android. You can see in the image, here I wanted to change the file name and tapped on rename and it will only show me the file name and not the file extension. If I try renaming this file, it will only rename the file and not its extension. There is a workaround for this.

All that you need to do is go to Play store and install file manager app. Most of the file manager apps support renaming extensions like Solid Explorer, ES File Explorer, Astro File Manager and Root Explorer. Install this file manager app and navigate to the file for which the file extension has to be renamed. Now, try renaming the file within this app. There are many more in the market. Let me know if there is any other better way to rename file extension.

This is useful sometimes when you get a file with the wrong file extension via email or while sharing and there will be a default app already assigned to it to to open that file. This is when you can change the default file extension and also change the default file opening app. Check out my another post on How to disable launch of default Android App.

ReplyDeleteMy phone has a file manager pre installed that allows you to change the file extension. I thought all phones did. Oops. Motorola ATRIX 2
ReplyDeleteI have all the above mentioned explorers. Before I could rename file extensions but recently not anymore. Neither with those explorer apps. I must say that I have rooted my tablet in the meantime and that I can switch routing of and on with the SuperSu app. Another problem is 'readonly' pdf files that are not really readonly. Result: I can't highlight text parts anylonger. This happened before the rooting but after I reduced the file size of some of those files on a Windows Vista machine with Adobe Acrobat. The pdf's are not image-pdf's. Windows and Adobe tell me that those files have all rights granted... Hard to do some decent study or other work if you're constantly distracted by this trouble.
ReplyDeleteconnect your phone to pc for change extension ... note that showing extension for knowing file types need to be enabled
ReplyDeleteYes Botti.. You are right. But what if you want change extension within Android phone without connecting it to PC. Say, when you don't have a PC around.. then this is the solution. :)
ReplyDeleteThis will not work with Android 4.4 if your files are on SD car. No more write access - this really sucks.
