If you have logged in to Gmail, you will find all your friends listed to the left (by default) or to the right of your inbox with whom you can chat. By default Gmail shows their status but by looking at the status you will not come to know, if they have logged in using a computer or on their Android device. If you are interested in knowing about this, there is a small update that you need to update in your settings.

Enabling Green Robot will show up all your chat buddies as robot icons (Android robot) if they are currently using an Android device. This is helpful as you will now know that your friend is on his Android phone, and it's better not to give him a video chat (which consumes more data) and he might be charged for using his data network. You can always chat and check if he is connected to WiFi and then proceed with the video chat. This holds good for users who are using Android device. Let me know if there is any other way to know about your friends who are using non-Android phones.

I have Green Robot enabled and I have a friend with an iPhone who shows up with the Android icon in my Gmail chat. I'm guessing that it shows up the same for all phones.
