Most of us want our websites to have a better or high traffic. I have seen people trying all other methods to increase traffic like trying with the back-links, spamming others blog by leaving comment along with their link, trying different software tools both online and offline etc. But doing all these will not fetch any good quality website traffic or visitors. Also, it may even bring down your page rank as per Google's algorithms.

The best way to know about your traffic source is using Google Analytics. Understand each of the traffic source and try different methods to improve that. As you can see here in the image, as per this writing, my blog is 4 months old and almost 81% of the traffic is from search results and most of them from Google. Again I can drill down further as to why other search engines are not showing my website in their search results. You might want to find out by checking Bing webmasters or other webmaster tools and check if each of your published posts have been indexed or not. 17% is from direct traffic, maybe from RSS feed or someone might have bookmarked my website and 1% is from social networking sites. I have not spent any money in campaigning till date and hence you don't find anything under that.

What I see here is that the traffic that I get from social networking sites is very less - just 1%. Note that this percentage depends on many other factors. It depends on the type of content. Say, if you have a photography website then traffic from social networking sites might be very high provided you have the highest shares and you share in all possible social networking websites. If you have optimized your image for search engines then you might get more traffic from Google search as well. Try to identify why you get low traffic from Google Analytics as it gives a detailed stats on how your website is performing. Try new things maybe for a month or two, monitor the performance and check if your website traffic has increased or not.

To be honest writing quality content on your own without copying is the only mantra or secret. And see that you share it on all possible social networking sites, check Google or other webmasters tools to know if your posts have been indexed or not. Fix all issues reported under webmasters as soon as possible. Blindly following the best practices of another website without looking into the type of content will not help much. Try somethings on your own and you can check, track, monitor all of these using Google Analytics and you can then take the right decision later on depending your website traffic.

To see percentage traffic from each of the traffic sources just go to Google analytics account and then select the view that you have created or select the default view. If you are not sure about views then you might also check: Why is it better to create multiple views for Website Analytics. Once selected, go to 'Acquisition' >> 'All Traffic'. To the top right corner, just below the graph there is an option named percentage. Click on it to get the percentage traffic view as shown in the image above.
