Sitemap to a website will help search engine crawl spiders to identify any of the missed URLs/pages. Usually most of the links once published are indexed, but there are chances that search engines like Google might also miss some of the pages of your website as it might not have been discovered by the crawl spiders. To avoid this from happening, you can help Google by having a sitemap of your website. It's recommended to have a Sitemap link on your landing or home page of your website or Wordpress website as the crawl spiders can easily identify all the pages in your site.
There are multiple plugins available on Wordpress which you can try installing. But I would not recommend installing these plugins as there are chances that it might slow down your website depending on the way how coding of plugin is done. The best way is to add a single line of code to the footer of your wordpress website or blog on your own. Follow the below mentioned steps to add sitemap link to the footer of your blog.
- Login to Wordpress as admin and navigate to Dashboard.
- Under theme options {Example: Montezuma options (Wordpress theme)} go to sub-template and add search for footer.php file. You can also find footer.php in your hosting server.
- If you are using a default template or one of the standard templates of Wordpress then you will might find copyright information etc.
- Just under this code copy paste the below code with your website sitemap link instead of mine and see that its inside <div> and </div>.
<a href="http://howtotechguru.com/sitemap.xml" target="_blank"> Sitemap </a>
- Click on 'Save Changes'.
- Now, check your website and you will find Sitemap link on the footer of your home or landing page as shown in the above image.
Clicking on this link will take you to a page full of links and that's the sitemap of your website. It's always better to have a sitemap link on your home or landing page so that Google or other search engine's crawl spiders can easily find all the pages including the undiscovered pages in one place.
