How important is Sitemap for a website

Most of the websites have a Sitemap placed in the footer of their website and when opened will usually display a page full of links. Sitemap is nothing but an XML file which contains a list of all the URLs of all the posts in a website along with the time the posts or pages were last published.

Having a Sitemap for a website in the footer will help search engine crawlers identify and index each of the URLs/posts faster. Having a Sitemap (even though not mandatory to have one) will help in providing additional information that may not otherwise be identified such as posts/pages/URLs that are not linked from any other post within a website. It's always better to add Sitemap to the footer of your website footer.

But before you can add Sitemap to footer in your website, you need to first create a Sitemap. There are enough number of Sitemap creators and the output will be a Sitemap.xml file. If you are using Wordpress then you can use a plugin by name "XML Sitemap Generator for WordPress" which you can install. There are multiple options available in this plugin which you can opt for before creating a Sitemap like include/exclude individual posts/pages that you want, set frequency, set priority for each of these etc.

Once your have generated Sitemap.xml file, upload and submit this file to Webmaster tools like Google Webmasters and Bing Webmasters. For Wordpress users the above mentioned plugin will automatically submit it to Google and Bing. The best thing about this plugin is as soon as a new post or a page is published, it will update the Sitemap file and inform search engines. You can even rebuild and submit the sitemap as and when you want.
