How to disavow links to your website

You might have seen that in the recent past there were many updates that were done to Google's Algorithm like Panda, Penguin and Hummingbird updates. And many websites had complaints that the traffic to their to website had come down drastically. There were multiple cases where website owners had done too much of SEO than the actual quality work. Now, with the latest Google algorithms, these websites are being affected the most as Google has been penalizing these websites.

Backlinks was one of the SEOs that was misused to the max by these websites. To get more backlinks and to bring down others website, there were multiple tricks that were used to get backlinks like paid links, comment spam, forum spam, blog spam, guest book spam, link spam or guest writing spam - where you pay others to write an article and the article is of poor quality and adding keyword rich text.

When ever Google finds such content there will be a notification in your webmasters account (if you have registered your website in Google Webmasters) saying there are unnatural links to your website or something like Google will take action against these unnatural links. What Google does is it will penalize your website and your page rank will come down. For a blog owner, this will be less traffic to his site and hence lower conversion rate.

The problem with paid links is these websites promise you to get 100 backlinks and charge you some amount. And some of them do it as promised. But as a website owner, it better to avoid these backlinks and the reason is these spam websites will promise N number of websites and they leave a backlink for all websites from the same spam website. For a website owner it may be hard to identify but for Google it's very easy to identify as these backlinks for all these websites come from the same set of spam websites. Also, note that these backlinks that you get from spammers will not help you in gaining anything.

If you were involved in these activities or your website had been penalized or if you have received a notification on your webmasters account and want to clean up your website from these unwanted backlinks then here is a way to get rid of all the backlinks. First you need to identify (using webmasters or other tools) about your unnatural backlinks and inform them to remove your link. It's a tedious task, but if you want your website to be back on track you will have to get it done. You will have to get the links removed from the web else visitors will not like the list of spam links that are displayed and also when visitors get irritated, it will only increase the bounce rate and the number of revisits to your website will come down. The good thing here is Google understands that it's really hard to remove links from all the sites and this is why they have the Disavow Links Tool [Link]. Enter all the links (from spam site) that you want to submit to Google in a text file with one link per line and then upload the file in Disavow Links tool. Once the file is uploaded, it might take few weeks for Google to process as it has to reprocess, re-crawl and re-index each of the links that you have uploaded.
