With the new update from Google to it's Gmail service, you can now easily download Gmail attachments directly to your Google Drive with a single click. Earlier, we have to download each of the attachments and then upload it to different cloud storage like Google Drive, Sky Drive, Dropbox or other similar online storage services. Later on these online storage services had come up with APIs using which developers developed plugins, extensions etc and made it even more simpler by integrating it with many apps, email etc.

Google had released multiple updates and has added many more features to Gmail in the recent past and one such feature is to download Gmail attachments directly to Google Drive. When you get an email by default, it will be saved in one of the tabs under inbox. I'm not speaking about the spam folder as it might have some special restrictions to block attachments. The email attachment that you get will be displayed more like an image. Just hover over this attachment/image, you will be able to see 'download now' and 'save to drive' option as shown below in the image.

You have even more options, once the attachment/image file is saved to your Google Drive you get multiple options 'Add to Drive and open with' and the best thing is it will even suggest apps using which you can open or edit the image attachment. You can easily edit the image using these apps and extensions that are available on Chrome Store. To see this click on the attachment/image. The image will now open in full screen and to the bottom right corner you get an option as shown here to the right. For my image there were three options. In addition to download and save to drive option there is a third option to open with 'Pixlr Express', 'PicMonkey', 'Pixlr Editor' etc or you can just go to Chrome store and install the app or extension that you like the most. The same applies to other type of attachments.

Note that this may not work at your work place or while using VPN, as some companies will have security restrictions to block all download of attachments or may not allow cloud storage services, to upload files. Also, the third option may not be available if you try this on other browsers other than chrome browser. Give it a try.
