How to clear facebook cache data

You might have shared hundreds of articles on Facebook in no time as its very simple and easy, with a click of a button. But before getting into Facebook cache lets understand what cache is. As per Wiki, a web cache is a mechanism for the temporary storage (caching) of web documents, such as HTML pages and images, to reduce bandwidth usage, server load, and perceived lag. Facebook caches the most recently shared and already shared posts/links for a better performance. This will usually not cause any issue but can sometimes show no image or description. Facebook caches post/page based on the url/link. There are different ways to shorten url. and share this shortened url in Facebook or in Twitter where the number of characters allowed is limited. You can add a query string by adding ?v=1 or any number. Either pasting the direct url with the string or the shortened url should not cause any issue  if you are sharing but if others are sharing the original post url without the string then they will have the same issue as before.

There is a workaround for this. Facebook has something called Facebook Debugger which is a tool that shows how a link looks like when shared. Any link can be used here and on clicking Debug it will fetch the latest title, description, image and other details. By using an already shared link here in this tool, Facebook returns the latest content and at the same time updates its cache with the latest content.

  1. Can you tell what is the Facebook cache timeout? I have a big site with thousands of pages - should I use Object Debugger for every URL to clear the cache or I can just wait for several hours/days and it will happen automatically?

  2. I had this issue.. had to do it manually for 1 or 2.. but after that I did not have issues.. Also, this tool will fix this issue only if the problem is from Facebook n not for others. It might depend on website n blog template as well
